In the United States alone, it is estimated that 15 million individuals struggle with alcoholism or alcohol misuse. Alcohol misuse is a chronic disease in which a person is unable to stop the cycle of excessive alcohol intake with zero regard for the repeated consequences. The consequences of alcohol misuse are just as individualized as the disease itself. From legal to physical health issues, alcoholism causes a decrease in quality of life.
Over time, most individuals develop a true dependence upon alcohol, increasing their daily consumption. When the alcoholic’s body becomes accustomed to alcohol, the body itself has a physical dependence upon it. If someone physically dependent upon alcohol stops drinking or attempts to cut down his or her drinking, he or she may undergo a period of withdrawal symptoms.
